Kennedy’s ElderMed Program Celebrates Older Americans Month
Monday, May 02, 2011

Kennedy offers a variety of programs designed for seniors.

May is Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme for the celebration is “Older Americans: Connecting the Community.”

For more than 20 years, the Kennedy Health System has shown its ongoing commitment to older adults in the community through its free ElderMed membership program. Designed for people 60 years and older, Kennedy’s ElderMed program helps its members – currently more than 40,000 strong from throughout South Jersey – become better informed healthcare consumers, and to make healthier lifestyle choices in the process!

An array of free and low-cost educational programs are offered throughout the year, at convenient times and locations in South Jersey, to address health concerns of our aging population.

“We strive to provide programming that is informative and fun,” said Tanya McKeown, Kennedy’s Community Wellness Program Manager. “Our members’ needs and interests are always at the forefront of the activities we plan and services offered.”

ElderMed members receive a program calendar three times a year, listing everything from health screenings to fitness classes to physician lectures specially geared toward their interests. Some examples include:

  • The Memory Challenge
  • Diabetes support group
  • Gentle yoga
  • Line dancing
  • Fall prevention
  • Eating for health & longevity
  • Medication review
  • Cancer prevention
  • Short story discussion club
  • Circle of knitting and crocheting
  • “Walk This Way” walking program

One exciting upcoming program is June 22nd’s “Health Info on the Web – What’s Reliable,” presented by Kennedy’s Interactive Marketing Manager Tracey Boyd, who will help those attending learn how to find reliable and trustworthy health information on the World Wide Web.

In addition to the many programs offered, Kennedy’s ElderMed members also enjoy special discounts in our hospital cafeterias, as well as the discounted ElderMed Breakfast and Dinner Clubs, held on specified dates throughout the year at Kennedy’s three hospitals (Cherry Hill, Stratford and Washington Township).

“ElderMed is a great way for older adults to broaden their social horizons, while improving their health and well-being,” McKeown said. “We welcome new members to join and find out how ElderMed can enhance their lives, and their health!”
