Helene M. Burns, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President for Patient Care Services at Kennedy University Hospital in Stratford, NJ, has been named one of the New Jersey Institute for Nursing’s “Divas and Dons.” Ms. Burns was honored at a special gala event at Bally’s Resort in Atlantic City on October 24th.
She was one of 19 New Jersey honorees from all areas of nursing -- including administration, pubic health, education and government affairs – recognized for their extraordinary impact on the profession and the community.
Ms. Burns has been a member of Kennedy’s leadership team since 2008. In her role as VP for Patient Care Services at Kennedy – Stratford, she oversees the operational and clinical aspects of care at the acute care hospital, which has more than 800 employees. In addition, Ms. Burns currently oversees the Kennedy Health System’s Supplemental Staffing department and is Kennedy’s site coordinator for the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicator (NDNQI) ®.
During Ms. Burns’ tenure with Kennedy – Stratford, the 181-bed acute care hospital has received Level 1 accreditation for its bariatric surgery program, through the American College of Surgeons’ Bariatric Surgery Network (BSCN). Kennedy – Stratford has also received the Gold Plus Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for its stroke program. Additionally, the hospital’s the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit was established in 2011 under Ms. Burns’ direction. Ms. Burns is serving as Kennedy’s 2012 Team Captain for the American Heart Association Heart Walk.
Ms. Burns earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (1981) and her Master of Science degree in Nursing (1994) from Widener University in Chester, Pa. She was the 1994 recipient of the Dean’s Award for Nursing during her graduate studies. With more than 30 years of nursing experience, Ms. Burns is a board certified Nurse Executive, Advanced through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She and her husband reside in Berlin, NJ.
