Helene Burns, MSN, RN, Named Chief Nursing Officer at Kennedy

Helene Burns, MSN, RN, has been named Chief Nursing Officer for Kennedy University Hospital, an integrated healthcare delivery system in southern New Jersey.  Ms. Burns, who is also Vice President of Clinical Services, will oversee the operational and clinical aspects of nursing care provided at Kennedy’s three acute care  hospitals, located in Cherry Hill, Stratford and Washington Township, NJ, with responsibility over its more than 1,100 Registered Nurses (RNs). 

 A member of the Kennedy leadership team since 2008 - where she served as VP of Clinical Services for Kennedy’s Stratford hospital --  Ms. Burns has been instrumental in the development and success of many programs and services. Under her leadership, Kennedy – Stratford has received Level 1 accreditation for its bariatric (weight-loss) surgery program, opened a specialized ACE Unit for the care of elderly patients, and received the Gold Plus Award for its stroke program from the American Heart Association, among other achievements.

In 2012, Ms. Burns – who serves as Kennedy’s Chairperson in the annual Southern NJ Fall Heart Walk -- was named one of the New Jersey Institute for Nursing’s “Divas and Dons” for her extraordinary impact on the profession and the community. With more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, her management experience includes seven years as Director of Nursing at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Pa.,  prior to joining Kennedy.  She also served as Administrative Director at Denton Regional Medical Center in Texas, and as an Administrative Director at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, NH.  Additionally, Ms. Burns spent more than 15 years (1982-1997) at AtlantiCare Health System in Atlantic City, where she held several leadership positions.

Ms. Burns earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (1981) and her Master of Science in Nursing degree (1994) from Widener University in Chester, PA, and received the Dean’s Award for Nursing during her graduate studies. A board-certified Nurse Executive, Advanced through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Ms. Burns resides in Berlin, NJ, with her husband.
