Looking Back - A Historical Perspective:

Kennedy was not always a healthcare system: It began in 1965 as a single, 99-bed facility, called John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, in Stratford, N.J.

Here are some highlights of Kennedy's history:

  • In 1977, Kennedy became affiliated with the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. Kennedy is now the Principal teaching affiliate of Rowan University-School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM), formerly UMDNJ-SOM.

  • In 1980, Kennedy became a multi-hospital system with the purchase of the Cherry Hill Medical Center (which opened in 1960) and Washington Memorial Hospital (which opened in 1972).

  • The Kennedy Health Care Foundation was created in 1983 and during the next two years, several subsidiary organizations - including STAT Medical Transport, Kennedy Property Corporation, and Kennedy Health Facilities - were established.

  • In September 1996, Gloucester County's first free-standing outpatient surgical facility, the Kennedy Surgical Center opened on the Washington Township hospital campus.

  • In early 1997, Kennedy's name became the Kennedy Health System. The three hospitals operated as Kennedy Memorial Hospitals – University Medical Center.

  • In 1998, a free-standing outpatient Dialysis Center at the Washington Township campus opened. A second new Dialysis Center, in Voorhees, opened in early 2003.

  • In 2001, a Ronald McDonald House Pediatric Unit opened in Washington Township (remodeled in 2009).

  • In February 2003, a $23.4-million Emergency Department opened at Kennedy's Washington Township Campus.

  • In February 2008, a modernized Maternity Center, featuring 22 private rooms opened at Kennedy’s Washington Township campus.

  • In June 2009, Kennedy joined the Penn Cancer Network. Kennedy is currently the only healthcare system in Camden, Burlington and Gloucester counties to be a member of the Network.

  • Coinciding with its 45th birthday, Kennedy - Stratford was re-dedicated at a special event in June 2010, following a $25-million façade project.

  • In March 2011, the first two Kennedy Health Alliance primary care physician practices – West Deptford and Marlton, NJ – were created. Other Kennedy Health Alliance offices have since opened in Voorhees, Sewell, Stratford, Sicklerville and Cherry Hill.

  • In November 2011, The Kennedy Neuroscience Center of Southern New Jersey, a member of the Jefferson Neurosciences Network (JNN), opened in Washington Township.

  • In Fall 2014, Kennedy Health partnered with Cooper University Health Care, expanding cardiac services in Gloucester County with the creation of a new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Kennedy Heart Center in Washington Township.

  • In Spring 2014 – and again in 2015 – Kennedy was selected as one of the Top Workplaces, the only healthcare system in the region to be included in the listing (under the sector of "Hospitals" for Large Employers).

  • In Summer 2014, Kennedy was named one of the Best Hospitals in the Country by U.S. News & World Report. Kennedy was included on three of the report's 2014-2015 regional lists for Best Hospitals: Philadelphia Metro Region; South Jersey Region; and the New Jersey state list. Kennedy was also singled out for high-performing specialties in Diabetes & Endocrinology and Geriatrics.

  • In early 2015, Kennedy Health System became Kennedy Health, redesigning its brand.

  • In late April 2015, ground was broken for the $60-million Phase I campus revitalization project at Kennedy – Cherry Hill. The first phase of the overall $200-million campus revitalization includes a new 102,000-square-foot Medical Office Building, an enclosed parking facility and a new atrium lobby. Phase II, scheduled to begin in late 2016, will feature a new inpatient pavilion with all-private rooms.

  • In June 2015, Kennedy officially celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special event held at its Stratford hospital on June 25, the same date that it opened a half-century ago.
