Jefferson Stratford Hospital Earns National Award for Quality

Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Jefferson Stratford Hospital in southern New Jersey has been named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization. Last year, the 181-bed Stratford, NJ, acute care hospital was named a Leapfrog Top General Hospital, marking the first time one of Jefferson Health’s New Jersey-based hospitals was named to the prestigious list.

Announced today, the Leapfrog Top Hospital awards are widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.

“This is a tremendous achievement for the entire staff of our Stratford hospital, which opened in 1965, as the first of three New Jersey hospitals now part of Jefferson Health,” said Joseph W. Devine, FACHE, President of the New Jersey Division, and Executive Vice President of Hospital and Health Services at Jefferson Health. “This recognition points to our singular focus on patient safety and quality as we continue to grow as part of Jefferson Health.”

A total of seven Jefferson Health hospitals – including its New Jersey hospitals – recently received “A” grades in the Fall 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

Among thousands of hospitals in the country, Jefferson Stratford Hospital received a Top Teaching Hospital distinction, one of less than 40 hospitals nationwide recognized in that category. The first affiliate of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM), since the mid-1970s, Jefferson’s New Jersey locations remain its principal teaching hospital.

In all, for the 2017 Top Hospital Awards, Leapfrog named:

  • 37 Top Teaching Hospitals
  • 44 Top General Hospitals
  • 10 Top Children’s Hospitals
  • 18 Top Rural Hospitals

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including meeting specific board-certified intensivist physician staffing ratios for its Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and the extensive use of Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) to help prevent medication errors. These rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are proud to recognize Jefferson Stratford Hospital as a 2017 Leapfrog Top Hospital. This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and the local community. The entire staff and board deserve praise for putting quality first and achieving results,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog.

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The selection of Top Hospitals 2017 is based on surveys from nearly 1,900 hospitals. To see the full list of institutions honored as 2017 Top Hospitals, visit www.leapfroggroup.org/tophospitals.
