Jefferson Washington Township Hospital Breaks Ground On $205 Million Expansion
Jefferson Health leadership, associates, fellow enterprise invitees and local dignitaries gathered on Wednesday, May 9, to celebrate the groundbreaking of a $205 million expansion of Jefferson Washington Township Hospital in Sewell, NJ.
Expansion will be divided into two phases, the first anticipated for a spring 2019 completion, followed by a spring 2021 completion for the second phase.
• Phase one ($23 million): will feature a new, 800-plus, 8-level enclosed parking facility, free to patients and visitors (with an additional 340 surface parking spaces).
• Phase two ($182 million): will feature a 7-floor patient tower with 60 private patient rooms (with space for 60 additional private patient rooms in the future); a main hospital entrance; a spacious, 2-story light-filled hospital lobby with a café and other visitor amenities; a hospital cafeteria with outdoor seating; a same-day surgery unit & recovery room (PACU); and a new central processing distribution center (CPD).
"Our Washington Township facility continues to evolve and grow to meet the needs of the communities we serve,” said Joseph W. Devine, President of Jefferson Health’s New Jersey Division. “We are thrilled to begin addressing the ever-increasing demand for parking on this campus."
Among the local dignitaries in attendance were State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland) and State Senator Fred Madden (D-Gloucester/Camden). Sweeney credited the significant investment as a calling for other businesses to “come, invest and grow” in South Jersey.
“A great regional hospital is one the first things people look for when they decide to move to a community or invest in a business there,” said Senator Sweeney. “Jefferson is showing what so many of us already know — South Jersey is growing. This new facility will serve our region well for generations to come.”
“When this project is completed, Jefferson will be a state-of-the-art hospital,” said Senator Madden. “Jefferson’s investment is another sign of how vibrant our region is and how much confidence businesses have in our economic future.”
Last fall’s Jefferson-Kennedy merger established a 13-hospital network of the Philadelphia- and South Jersey-based health care systems. The Jefferson Washington Township Hospital expansion is the latest chapter for the broadened enterprise.
"Nobody should have to leave New Jersey for whether it's the greatest clinical trials or genomics or all the things you read about in the best university hospitals," said Dr. Stephen Klasko, President and CEO of Jefferson Health. "Instead of bringing New Jersey to Jefferson, this expansion helps bring Jefferson to Washington Township."
