Physical and Occupational Therapy

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy (PT) involves the evaluation and treatment of physical disabilities resulting from injuries or various medical conditions. Designed to improve physical strength, range of motion, daily living activities and functional ability, treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation, so our therapists can develop a personalized treatment for each patient. Throughout your recovery, you'll have a dedicated therapist who shares your goals and will help you reach them.

Occupational Therapy

The goal of Occupational Therapy, or OT, is to improve or restore function so that you can participate in activities of daily living to the fullest extent possible. Our Occupational Therapists will help you learn new skills or adapt to a permanent loss so you can perform day-to-day tasks that are part of routine living—whether at work, home, school or within the community. OT is “therapy for daily living,” and focuses on using purposeful activities to restore, maximize and maintain function. The need for OT is often tied in to a traumatic injury, repetitive motion disorder, an orthopedic or neurological condition, or a recurring injury or illness.

Occupational Therapy is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Arthritis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Dislocations and fractures
  • Lymphedema (post-operative swelling of the upper and lower extremities)
  • Nerve injuries
  • Sprains/strains
  • Stroke
  • Tendon injuries
  • Tendonitis
  • Trauma of bones or joints
  • Upper body injuries and pain

Our Treatment Team

Jefferson's Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department offers the services of specially trained Occupational Therapists—including one with specialized training in Hand Therapy—who provide comprehensive care aimed at restoring and maximizing independence, preventing disability and maintaining health. OT strives to improve coordination, balance, cognitive skills, strength, and range of motion. Adaptations for disability are also addressed through compensation training and adaptive equipment. Jefferson Outpatient Occupational Therapy services focus on five performance areas to enable patients to participate in the meaningful activities of daily life: motor, sensory, cognitive, psychosocial, and social functioning.

Setting & Reaching Your Goals

Each OT patient at Jefferson undergoes a thorough evaluation and interview to assess their level of function and to establish a personalized treatment plan that addresses their specific goals and needs. Each patient's treatment plan is closely supervised and re-evaluated every 30 days to ensure that the most effective modalities are utilized.
